Wale – “Ambition”

December 26, 2012 in Featured, Music, Reviews

Artist: Wale
Album: Ambition
Release Date: November 1st, 2011

Wale starts off his second solo album “Ambition,” with a track properly titled “Don’t Hold Your Applause.” As the song fades into a soft go go influenced beat produced by Tone P, the first thing we hear is the trademark “Maybach Music” sample. Off the bat, we know what we’re getting ourselves into. To someone unfamiliar with Wale, the initial response to the album might be overwhelming. But to a fan listening to his lyrics, “Tired of making money, I’m on to making history,” paints a vivid picture of what Wale means by “Ambition.”

Wale is much more then your “average rapper.” It’s not about the flashy Maybachs or the heavy gold chains (which I’m sure he doesn’t mind), it’s about making a statement and an impact on the world. To Wale his statement is his life, which he is bringing to us via his album. He has grown exponentially as an artist, working with everything he has to get to his level. Listening to tracks such as “Double M Genius” and “Legendary,” one might get the impression of a cocky rapper. Look past the initial appearance and into the heart of the music. “GQ man of the year,” Wale says, referencing his GQ cover with fellow rappers Kid Cudi and Drake. “Went away for a little, let my wisdom increase,” meaning that even after making a name for himself, Wale stayed away from the limelight to grow even more. Staying humble, he brings back his “Ambition” motto saying, “underrated that’s temporarily for the moment.”

Throughout this album Wale lyrically plays with his words, describing his success but at the same time addressing the fact the he is far from where he wants to be. This is a #GOLDen way of thinking because he will always be determined to work hard with “no days off.” “Ambition” is more then the album title, it’s a way of life. No one other then Wale himself, can say that he hasn’t made it. His passion, talent and determination already sets him apart from others. Even though his debut album “Attention Deficit” was amazing, I think when the time comes, “Ambition” will be the album that defines Wale – that is of course, until his next album drops.

D-Town, West Side: “Detroit” Mixtape Review

September 15, 2012 in Blog, Music, Reviews

Big Sean dropped his highly anticipated mixtape “Detroit” earlier this month and to say the least, he didn’t disappoint. The G.O.O.D. Music heavyweight did something special with this tape. Not only is the project actually a theme mixtape based on his hometown, but he stays with the theme in an impressive way by having big rap names appear on 3 interludes explaining their experience with Detroit and why they love it. These interludes consist of Jeezy, Snoop, and Sean’s fellow G.O.O.D. Music label mate, Common. But the features don’t stop there. Big Sean also amassed a great number of other artists for features on his tracks such as, King Chip (Formerly “Chip The Ripper”), Juicy J, J Cole, Chris Brown, and many more. With such a wide range of featured artists with different styles, its easy to see how diverse this mixtape gets. From beginning to end this album styled mixtape will have you feeling like you’re actually from Detroit. In my opinion, projects like this tape are the reason G.O.O.D. Music is a force to be reckoned with in the battle for the top of the rap game. All that said, I certify this mixtape #GOLD……Boi!!

Black Cobain: “We Are Young”

July 17, 2012 in Music, Reviews

As Black Cobain continues to drop free tracks for his fans after his recent “Cheers” mixtape release, we run into something we’re already quite familiar with. The band “Fun,” has gained a large amount of popularity due to their song “We Are Young.” Becoming one of the theme songs for this year, the original song creates an image of a young generation who parties hard and lives their life to the limit.

Cobain sees this song as an opportunity to express what he has been going through this past year as an up and coming artist. He starts out the song by shouting out his record label “B.O.A.” and raps about how their come up as a young group has led to many new experiences, witnessing haters and non believers along the way. With the end of his first verse we see that after everything Cobain has gone through, the outcome has been “more brown liquor in [his] kidneys.” He is implying that he doesn’t care about the obstacles he faces in life. He’s getting paid and chooses to spend his money for his enjoyment. Check out the track below and leave a comment. Don’t forget to share.

Traffic Jam – Malik Ferraud ft. Phil Ade

June 22, 2012 in Music, Reviews

Baltimore rapper Malik Ferraud teams up with another 301 resident Phil Ade to create an appropriate DMV track titled “Traffic Jam.” Produced by Nefarious, the beat emits a cool summertime vibe filled with crisp hi hats and melodious tunes that drift your mind off into space. Production is key to any song but, I can’t emphasize enough how crucial the right beat is for any particular track. As the intro sample mentally prepares you, Malik drives right into the verse and seamlessly merges his vocals with the flow of the instruments. His light but precise voice helps to effectively narrate the scene being depicted; an artist who is keeping pace with others on the same road as him. As Malik tries to maneuver his way around, Phil Ade shows up on verse two and perfectly keeps pace. As a feature is meant to be, Phil Ade does not overtake his verse leaving Malik behind. Instead, both artists work together to create something great that fans can mentally cruise to. This puts both artists ahead of everyone else. Listen and tell me your thoughts.

Ben G Releases “My Vision” Music Video

June 21, 2012 in Featured, Music, Reviews, Videos

We had a great response after we posted about the Ben G “Cak-ill-ak Muzik” mixtape release. The young and fairly new artist from Columbia, SC is starting to gain recognition throughout the nation. WE LOVE IT! Everyday we are introduced to aspiring new artists trying to get their name out and it shows how much talent there is in the world. Shot, directed and edited by Trevor Mercer, the music video for “My Vision” tells a story of overcoming struggle. Although Ben G still has a long way to go before becoming a household name, his music and determination alone will get him far. But as he creates more music and videos, he must keep in mind that he needs to stand out in this competitive world. Once he does, “[his] Vision” will come true.

Check out the video posted above and tell us what you think. As always, don’t forget to share.

DOPE: Gotye’s Creative Side

May 14, 2012 in Music, Reviews, Videos

Video credits:
Directed, produced and edited by Natasha Pincus
Body art by Emma Hack
Cinematographer and colourist: Warwick Field
Scenic artist: Howard Clark

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an artist as unique as Gotye (Wouter De Backer). Let me start by saying that he has been making music for more then 10 years, but I’ve only recently been introduced to him. Probably like most of you, I first heard Gotye when I was introduced to “Somebody That I Used to Know.” After Google-ing the track name, I came across it’s music video which I embedded above. Now it’s not the “coolest” video i’ve seen, but artistically and creatively, I was blown away. The video is directed by Natasha Pincus along with cinematographer Warwick Field who have worked together on many music videos. Here is a little background info about the video shoot:

The challenge of Gotye’s new music video “Somebody That I Used To Know” for Warwick was integrating complex stop-motion elements of painting with live action elements of performance. At first the video was to be shot on Red or Alexa, but the stop-motion element which required split screen compositing with the live footage, pointed the camera choice to the Canon 5D MkII. This was simply because the 5D could be controlled by Dragon software to capture the single frame animation and then seamlessly swapped to HD video capture using the same lenses and sensor. The result would be straight forward image matching between the two capture methods.

The project involves the progressive animated painting of a mural behind Gotye while he sings, and then as the clip advances the paint enveloping his body to finally show he has become one with the background. The view widens to reveal the female vocalist on the track, Kimbra who is also painted “into the background”. As the lyrics describe the breakdown of the relationship, Kimbra becomes depainted – unattached – by stop motion again. This sequence required reverse printing the shot and blending it with the live vocal footage.

The shoot took place over two very long days of painstaking and meticulous work by the crew and scenic artist Howard Clark and body illustrator Emma Hack.

This video is one of many other dope videos by Gotye. Now although he is musically talented, he’s not “the best” there is. But honestly, what makes an artist #GOLD, is the fact that they must stand out in some way. Gotye definitely surpasses many other artists in this criteria because he continuously crosses the ordinary. Check out a short documentary about the “making of” his new album below. Download: Sam Lachow “Avenue Music EP”

April 3, 2012 in Featured, Music, Reviews

Yup, Sam Lachow is back at it again. I became a fan of his work when I was recently introduced to his “Brand New Bike” album. Here I am, not even a couple months later, posting yet another album available completely for free. I’m also proud to announce that Sam is the first artist to receive the Gold Star Critic “Certified Gold” tag!

The tape starts off with a track titled “Got Soul,” featuring Ariana Deboo who begins the song off by singing over a simple piano. The classy and definitely soulful intro keeps the listeners glued waiting for the beat to drop. A perfect song chosen to start off the album by giving his audience a glimpse into who he is. I can go on and on about his dope lyrics and unpredictable flow that is sure to be a hit with the college crowd, but there’s much more to Sam then just that.

I don’t think people understand exactly how talented he is. As I’ve said before, Sam Lachow not only writes his lyrics, but he produces his beats, engineers his albums and even directs his own music videos. On top of all that, this boy is only in his early 20s, meaning that he still has very far to go.

Stream the complete album below or download it from here.

“Cheers on the way, how about another cold summer?” Black Cobain just does not stop!! With his new mixtape ‘Cheers’ on the way next month, Cobbizy continues to release new music for his fans. This new 10 min freestyle released today at 2pm is a good example of how capable he is. Rapping over multiple different beats, Cobain proves that he is creative and talented enough to try anything. J. Cole – “The Sideline Story”

September 27, 2011 in Reviews

Artist: J. Cole
Album: The Sideline Story
Release Date: September 27, 2011
Star Rating: 4.5

“The Sideline Story,” the debut album of the first artist to sign onto Jay – Z’s Roc Nation record label. I think it’s safe to say that many people were waiting for this album to release and i’m right there with each of them. As always, I’m going to write this album review as unbiased as possible.

As the intro track begins, those familiar with Cole find themselves at the beginning of yet another wonderful adventure. Those that are listening to J. Cole for the first time will find themselves feeling like they’re about to listen to the story of a legend. Soft piano melodies fade in and crescendo as Cole talks and jumps into an inspirational flow about how he got to his present status in life.

Appropriately, the intro track ends and leads right into the next song titled “A Dollar and a Dream.” (The third version of a song featured on his previous mixtapes) Each song on the album has deep lyrics and meanings that not every artist can offer. Talking about being an unique artist, Cole is in a different league with more then lyrics in his music.

Although there aren’t many features on the album, the ones that do appear are powerful artists. J. Cole teams up with Drake for the first single off the album that released early on. Also present is the man that can be considered as J. Cole’s mentor. Jay -Z and Cole collaborate and create a song with a sick beat and lyrics that compliment their swag. Their song “Mr. Nice Watch” is definitely a song that will be blasting in the clubs all year. Last but not least, Cole brings back someone that hasn’t been heard of in a while. Missy Elliot gets on the track with J. Cole for the song “Nobody’s Perfect.” Although its been years since I’ve personally heard Missy Elliot, her appearance on the song gave it different flow that Cole still seemed to master.

No matter who your favorite artist is, I recommended you buy and listen to this album because this “new” artist is definitely turning heads. I’m sure his name will be listed as features on other albums soon to hit the shelves as well. I can’t wait for whatever is in store next. #COLEWORLD

Mixtape: Los drops “Worth the Wait”

July 18, 2011 in Music, Reviews

Rapper Los drops yet another mixtape, “Worth the Wait.” No matter if you like his music or not, there is no denying that Los has one of the dopest flows out right now. I know there are a lot of talented artists out there, and I am not saying he’s the “best,” but this kid has serious talent and potential. Let me know what you think.
