Big Sean – “Finally Famous”

June 28, 2011 in Reviews

Artist: Big Sean
Album: Finally Famous
Release Date: June 28, 2011
Star Rating: 4

Big Sean is an artist that I took a long time to come and accept. As much hype as there was around his name, I only paid attention to his music because he was signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music record label. Because of his huge fan base, I felt forced to listen to his debut album and write a review for it. As the intro track started playing, I began to think to myself exactly how a fairly new artist had as many fans as he did. I didn’t need to look far for an answer because he explains it right in the intro track. “I never made the crowd fans, I made them all fam.”

I treated Big Sean with the same respect I do with every artist that I come across. No matter who the artist is, I believe everyone is working hard to make it some place in the world. Because I gave Big Sean a try, his album “Finally Famous” really opened my eyes. His flow and style is something that most people will need time to accept. But listening to this album gave me an insight to what his fans see in him. Every song starting with “I Do It” has the effect to get you moving and nodding your head. His song “My Last” featuring Chris Brown became an instant hit with his fans and anyone else that listens to the radio or goes to the club.

But Sean didn’t make just any old club banger with this song, he made a song that had a message. Although we might not be able to relate to his lavish lifestyles and parties, we can relate by having a day in our lives which almost seemed perfect. Keeping up with the same theme, Big Sean creates songs that we all somehow relate to. His love songs about people we’ve lost and missed out on contain images that have flashed by our own eyes at one point or another. To drive the point a little further, he invites other great artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and John Legend to accompany him in telling his life stories.

Even though his songs relate with his fans, most of the music that Big Sean makes is directed towards the younger college crowd. I don’t think that’s a negative aspect because that’s the group he can most associate with and that just makes his lyrics more genuine. Being a fairly new artist, I expect to see much more great work coming from Big Sean. Having a mentor like Kanye West is only gonna make things better. Sean has had the opportunity to work with great talents and I hope he uses his life lessons to his advantage.

Cyhi The Prynce – “Royal Flush 2″

June 14, 2011 in Reviews

Artist: Cyhi The Prynce
Album: Royal Flush 2
Release Date: June 14, 2011
Star Rating: 4.5

CyHi The Prynce, a highly talented artist from Atlanta, is definitely in a league of his own. “Royal Flush 2” is his second mixtape on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music record label. CyHi’s unique style can be seen just by looking at track list to his new mixtape. The whole mixtape was organized and split up into four parts; “Spadez, Heartz, Clubz and Diamondz.” Together, all four unique and powerful parts come together and produce the “Royal Flush.”

The first song on the mixtape starts off with slow and smooth synthesized strings. As the beat builds up, more strings and other instruments join in and crescendo until the beat pauses and we hear CyHi state his name. The beat then breaks down to loud kicks hi-hats that lay the foundation for CyHi’s great lyrics. Appropriately titled “When The Smoke Clears,” the mixtape starts off with a track that he directs towards his haters.

His flow completely changes on the next song to a jumpy, punctuated verse recorded over a beat containing the famous “Cold As Ice” sample. As CyHi switches from his “Spadez” mentality over to his “Heartz” phase, his fans witness an artist that is talented at performing different styles and themes. His style continuously changes throughout all four separate sections of his mixtape.

CyHi The Prynce is definitely an artist that deserves more attention then he is getting. People that see who he is as an artist can tell that he has great talent and potential at becoming much more in the next couple years. The past few years for him has been great for him including his signing onto the G.O.O.D. Music label. With this new mixtape out, he has already had the opportunity to work with many other great artists such as Pusha T, Trey Songz and B.o.B. If he keeps this up, his first official album is going to have a great reaction.

Mixtape: Black Cobain “Young Gifted & Black”

June 7, 2011 in Music, Reviews

Artist: Black Cobain
Mixtape: Young Gifted & Black
Release Date: June 7, 2011

Let me start by saying that I was introduced to Black Cobain when I first heard his song with Wale titled “4 AM.” I was surprised by his unique sound and style. As I listened to more of his old songs, I grew more and more anxious for the release of the “Young Gifted & Black” mixtape.

The mixtape begins with an intro track that sets the stage and gives the listeners a glimpse of who Black Cobain is and what he represents. If you didn’t understand from the line “it’s Virginia till the devil come and get me,” Cobain represents his hometown of Virginia. Not only does he continuously shout-out Virginia in this mixtape, but he also collaborates with other DMV artists like Wale who can be heard on three tracks. The “no days off” theme can be seen as the next track jumps right into a head bobbing heavy bass filled track titled “Busy Now.”

Black Cobain shows that he doesn’t need a collaboration to create a great sounding track. In the track “I’m Cold,” Cobain does an amazing job in creating a point of how talented of an artist he is. His crisp flow matches perfectly with the beat producing yet another track that his fans can enjoy. His lyrics are sure to turn heads with his formulated punch lines and intellectual themes.

Another aspect that makes Black Cobain an amazing, unique artist is his humble personality which can be seen in the outro track. That number runs for 10 minutes and 21 seconds which he uses to name many people who have helped him throughout the years. As an up and coming artist, Black Cobain is doing amazingly well. The hard work that he continues to put into his work is definitely paving the way to a great future. I’m eager to see where he goes next. #COBIZZY
